life:

As Red Bull Stratos puts it:

On August 16, 1960 Joe Kittinger became a real-life superhero
It was the “highest step in the world”. Joe Kittinger made history as he ascended to 102,800 feet in a high-altitude balloon and jumped to Earth, setting four world records. Today, in an attempt to beat Joseph Kittenger’s record, Felix Baumgartner will jump from a space capsule 23 miles above earth.

In one of LIFE’s most iconic covers(above), Joe Kittinger is pictured free falling from the sky during his historic journey when he leaped from the edge of space. Tomorrow, in an attempt to beat Kittinger’s record, Felix Baumgartner will jump from a space capsule 23 miles above Earth. Baumgartner would be the first person to break the sound barrier if he manages to do so during his jump.
Safe travels, Felix. Read more about tomorrow here.

Wow.
father-knows-best:

My son was born during the Royal Wedding. We had it on the television during labor. Nothing like the bells of Westminster Abbey to usher in the birth of your son. A few days later we brought him home, and that night, while being nervous first-time parents alone with their newborn, President Obama announces the death of Osama Bin Laden. What a historic weekend that I tried to capture using these instantaneously iconic Time Magazines.

Everyone had someone in their family who had been killed. We felt very bad saying “Please help us get out of here. We have lost our friends.” We couldn’t say that, because they had lost everything.
— French photographer William Daniels, recalling his escape from Syria after two of the other journalists he was with were killed by the Assad regime. His story is on the cover of this week’s issue of TIME. (via timemagazine)
